Ratios and Relationships

Ratios express a relationship between One Part and The Whole, or between Two Parts.

The Ratio is expressed using a colon. The colon looks like :

In this example, the whole is nine parts. The whole is made of circles, triangles, squares.

To express this relationship as a Ratio, use the number of the Part and the number of the Whole separated with a colon.

The Ratio of circles to all shapes is 4 : 9
There are 4 circles in every whole of 9 parts

The Ratio of triangles to all shapes is 3 : 9
There are 3 triangles in every whole of 9 parts

The Ratio of squares to all shapes is 2 : 9
There are 2 squares in every whole of 9 parts









The Ratio is read as Parts in Total or Parts to Total
